NEW YORK, NY, June 27, 2023 – Vladeck, Raskin & Clark, P.C., the preeminent employment law firm based in Manhattan, today announced Norman L. Reimer, a nationally recognized leader in criminal defense and justice reform, has joined its team as of counsel. Supporting the firm’s growing criminal defense practice, Reimer focuses on the representation of the accused in state and federal courts at the trial and appellate levels.
“Norman is an exceptionally brilliant attorney who combines his deep knowledge of the law and unrivaled advocacy skill in and out of the courtroom with sensitivity and dedication in his representation of clients,” says Susan J. Walsh, the law firm’s partner who established its criminal defense practice in 2010. “Having previously partnered with Norman, I am confident his expertise and approach perfectly complement our high standard of client-centered service.”
Reimer has devoted his career to the criminally accused at the trial, appellate and postconviction levels and participated in the trials and appeals of hundreds of cases in both state and federal jurisdictions. He also is known for his criminal justice reform advocacy.
Norman Reimer served for 15 years as the executive director of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL), the nation’s preeminent criminal defense organization, whose mission is to reform the policies and practices that fuel mass incarceration and disparate impact. In 2009, he co-founded the John Adams Project in partnership with the American Civil Liberties Union to make attorneys trained in capital defense available to the under-resourced military defense counsel at Guantanamo Bay. Reimer also led a collaboration among several groups to establish the Clemency Project 2014, which became one of the largest national pro bono initiatives ever undertaken by the legal profession and secured the commutation of long federal prison sentences for nearly 900 individuals. After his tenure at NACDL, Reimer served as CEO of Fair Trials, an international criminal justice reform organization, from 2021 to 2022.
“Many criminally accused individuals have benefited directly and indirectly from Norman’s unwavering dedication to addressing unjust and biased policies and practices throughout the criminal legal system,” says Anne L. Clark, the firm’s president and managing partner. “We are pleased to have him support our team, as we support his vision as well.”
While at Vladeck, Reimer continues to be part of various reform initiatives through his service on the advisory committees of the national End the Trial Penalty Coalition as well as the Plea Bargaining Institute. Reimer is also a member of the national Council on Criminal Justice.
“I am thrilled to join Vladeck, a firm known for its pioneering lawyering as well as its advocacy,” says Reimer. “I look forward to supporting the expansion of its criminal defense practice, while also pushing for reform with partner organizations.”
Prior to his tenure at Fair Trials and NACDL, Reimer served as president of the New York County Lawyers Association and was a partner at Gould Reimer Walsh Goffin Cohn, LLP.
